What was your favorite Superbowl Ad?

One word to describe Superbowl XLI Commercials this year…..

Ok – so there are more words.  So my question is which ad agency got the ax? Someone certainly had to lose their job over this atrocity! I mean the only company that came out looking decent was once again Budweiser! They were on the violent side (think rock, paper, scissors! – and the fist bump is out/let’s slap each other on the face!), but they reached their target audience – mainly men whose humor lies with the slap-stick comedy.

Then you had Frito-Lay and Coke utilizing Black History month and the fact that for the first time in history, two black coaches were opposing each other in the Superbowl. So they added “today” in their history books.  They were nice commercials, which I believe would reach out to their target audiences.  They were tasteful and appealing commercials, yet will that make the black community run to the markets to purchase their products? Most likely they already are. But their main objective, in my opinion, was getting their name out there – brand recognition – and letting America know they support Black History. Not a bad idea.

GoDaddy.com – another stupid commercial – did anyone catch the OCC  though rating the dancer! I had to rewind a few times to be sure it was them! I am sure there were other “celebrities” in the commercial, but again, personally I thought the commercial was a flop. But it is all about brand recognition and even though they have been airing commercials during the Superbowl for the past 2 years, it put their name out there once again – to remind people they are still out there.

Doritos – only two commercials. I liked the first one! I thought it was creative – I may be biased since I love Doritos, but what the heck, I say it was one of my favorite commercials. I liked how the “novice” described the character’s traits with words that would describe the chip. I thought it was ingenious. I liked it. And thought it was funny in a corny way!  The other commercial was just dumb – the one with the cashier getting all worked up over the different flavor Doritos the customer was purchasing.

But the commercial that actually had me laughing out loud – and I like to do that – was the Blockbuster Total Access – the one with the bunnies trying to access the site with the mouse! At first I thought they were giving it CPR! When I realized what they were trying to do, I laughed! That commercial was great – really creative. Even though mouse and mouse have been linked before, it was done in a way that was comical and kept the viewers interest. This commercial would appeal to mainly the movie watchers that love the animated flicks such as “Over the Hedge”.  Ingenious.

Pizza Hut – dud.

CareerBuilders.com – so so. I thought it was Survivor meets LOST – perhaps that is what they were going for. I thought it was creative enough, but at first watch, it just seemed annoying.

Most of the commercials did that for me. While watching the ads, I was extremely disappointed. A lot of critics say they were overly violent. Maybe I am already desensitized, but I didn’t think there was anything terrible regarding that. I thought the heart association commercial was appropriate – it was clearly a man dressed as a heart with villain type characters attacking him. I think we can all distinguish against “superhero” action vs. real life violence. All in all I thought that public announcement – I won’t even call it a commercial – was effective.

But like I stated previously, most of the commercials were a big DISAPPOINTMENT – lacking creativity and appeal. Better luck next year!

High School Football Player dies of heatstroke and my son thinks I am overcautious!

My son has voluntary football practice today.

6:00 – 8:00

He has asthma.

“The heat index is going to get up to 106 degrees, there is a heat alert for NY state athletics, I do not think it is safe to play in these conditions.” A quote from my daughter’s lacrosse coach backing up his reasons for canceling her game this evening.

My son thinks I am over-reacting when I told him I don’t want him to go to practice this evening.

My husband thinks the coach will call and cancel – he hasn’t yet (3:49 PM). I am executing my parental obligations and being the adult in this situation I am refusing to take him to practice.

A boy a bit older than he died of heat exhaustion just the other day during “voluntary” football practice in Georgia.  They call it voluntary so that the school or the athletic department is not held accountable – but you are forced to attend if you want to be considered for the team in the fall. My son assures me he will know if he is taking it too hard and knows how to pace himself.

I don’t think so!

I don’t know about you – but I don’t think it’s worth taking that chance.

What a Beautiful Day it Was!

The sun shined yesterday!
My daughter went on her class picnic and had a great time.
Her friend however, said it was the best and the worst day ever. She had a wonderful time, but about two hours into the day she fell and broke her shoulder – she is very lucky – it could have been her neck.
She was doing cheerleading stunts with some other girls and was dropped. Her backer wasn't there for her. She never cried but held her arm close to her chest. After a half hour of icing her shoulder and noticing the swelling was getting worse, they opted to take her for X-rays and realized she broke the shoulder.
Another boy twisted his ankle.
So it was a glorious day with the sun shining with a cool breeze – perfect weather – a welcome change from the wretched days we had, but yet a damper was put on the festivities with these two incidents.
Today – it is raining!

(At least my son was able to play his baseball game yesterday, even though they lost by one run! He scored twice, so I am pleased.  My daughter had her softball game as well – they lost too – the score was 16-1, no suprise there!  My son had his lacrosse game on Wednesday, he was the first to score, yet they lost 11-6. His game today will no doubt be canceled!)

My husband is mowing the lawn.

I have to run out to get my religion class an end of year gift! Yeah – last day – but they are going to be bouncing off the walls because it is the first nice day in two weeks and they have to come to class!  I will make it worth their while – as we learn to be peacemakers, they can have some munchkins from Dunkin Donuts!

My son has his lacrosse game today!

Now let's just take one day at a time and hope and pray for sun until tomorrow – for my daughter's class picnic!

But weather forecast changed yet again – they are calling for thunderstorms – please hold out!

71°F 21°C
52°F 11°C

Can we catch a break – please?

Thursday: Partly cloudy with afternoon thunderstorms. A few storms may be severe. High 71F. Winds SSW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 60%.
Thursday night: Showers likely along with a possible rumble of thunder during the evening, then partly cloudy overnight. Low 52F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 40%.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Well – here it is Mother's Day.

A day like all the rest.

Except for one detail – my children.

They are old enough to do for me! My daughter was very excited to wake up and tell me not to come into the kitchen until she says it is ok.  She surprised me with pancakes – she added 3 cherries, 2 for eyes, 1 for the nose and used a fork to carve out a mouth! She did a nice job!

On the table were a nice arrangement of flowers my husband purchased.  The kids signed their names to the card.  It is arranged in a beautiful teapot – I love teapots and my collection is now growing.

Yesterday I picked up the flats of plants that I purchased from my son's fundraiser.  I wanted to plant them today, but time won't allow.  I have beautiful dahlias, vinca vine, zinnias and draecona spikes.  My dianthus are already in full bloom in my garden bed.  I love to garden but it is hard on my back.

My family always asks what I would like as presents.  Not being of a materialistic nature, I never know what to answer. But yesterday as I drove down my block to my house I spotted a robin and some bluejays.  I forget how many different birds are around me and I find it just refreshing to hear them chirp and look out my window and see them flutter around.  It reminded me that I always wanted one of the handmade birdhouses a man designs not too far from my home.  These houses MUST be in the hundreds, since they look like mini-mansions on a pole!  They are just beautiful – I want the purple Victorian home!  I want to stake it into my yard and see all the birds that come to feed there.

I love nature, so does my husband – so it is hard for us that we only live on 1/4 acre of land.  Growing up in the city, my family doesn't understand my heartache – they consider me very lucky.  Although, driving to their home yesterday, I was very agitated.  The congestion on the road was unbearable.  I want to go further out into the country and just live a simple life.  But that is not in store for me.  I don't want to go too far from my family – as it is they think I live at the ends of the earth – 70 miles away!

So I have no time to plant today – I have my daughter's lacrosse game at 4 PM.  Love how they smack that game right in the middle of my day! BUT, I love to see my children play their games – I will watch her deflect and defend the net for approximately an hour.  She is a pretty darn good goalie, yet my heart always skips a beat watching her take hit after hit, even though she is wearing the protective gear.  She is in her own little heaven playing, so it makes me happy!

Perhaps we will go to an all you can eat Chinese buffet.  We all love Chinese food, except for my husband, but he is a trooper and will suffer for us!

So far my day has been nice.  I wish we were doing more, got up earlier and got the day started sooner, but I am with the ones I love and that is what is important.

My daughter won her lacrosse game – she took a beating in the net but only let 4 get by.  But they took a lot of shots so she did great!  Her team was amazing too, we lost count at 12 goals.  Her coach is wonderful – teaching sportsmanship.  Since they were ahead by so many goals he told them to pass at least 4 times before shooting leftie (as most are righties!).  The girls came off the field feeling pretty good about themselves.

We didn't go to an all you can eat buffet, we agreed that it may not be the most sanitary of conditions, so we opted for sit down at a different Chinese restaurant.  Service was horrible – we thought the waiter was not happy to be there – and we are gracious customers – always saying please and thank you – never rude or discourteous – so he must have had some bad day!  It took us 3 hours to get through dinner! But we enjoyed the conversation and the Mai Tais!

Back to Gay Porn

I was looking up information regarding ties with aggressive sports such as football and lacrosse, to violent attacks such as rape. Naturally, the Duke University Lacrosse Team incident spurred my curiosity along with the fact that my son is actively involved in both sports as well.

While searching, I came across information on Kazuhito Tadano, a pitcher with the Oakland A’s.  It appears he was involved in a gay porn while studying in college in Japan. (He regrets this one time incident; attributes it to being young, naive and in need of money.) Japanese teams would not draft him because of this incident, however, it is clear that the United States does not hold this against him.  He has been playing with Oakland for the past 3 years.

He adamantly denies being gay – it appears major league ball players are encouraged to remain in the closet – none are openly gay. [I am not saying in this statement, that I disbelieve his statement – I am merely pointing out the fact that major league establishments (NFL, NBA, MLB) shun this lifestyle.] However, I applaud them that they did not let this one time occurrence ruin the rest of this man’s career.  However, baseball is not an organization where I would look for role-models in our children’s lives. Unfortunately, a lot has changed over the years.  Just read the headlines regarding steroid use, and other ways players “cheat” to break the records.  Let’s not forget the ones that are addicted to drugs, and constantly find themselves in the limelight for participating in criminal activities.

It’s not just football and lacrosse.

But, I won’t mention the LOVE BOAT incident with my favorite team “The Vikings”! That’s a whole other story!

Re: Commercials

I just got finished watching the Superbowl myself and agree with this posting.  I do believe last year’s “wardrobe malfunction” and the fines imposed left a lasting impression.  Although when the first Commercial for Dominoes came on with Jessica Simpson, I thought it was going to be all like that.  (I thought it to be inappropriate that she was seducing a teenager – my husband got mad that I was dissecting the commercials and ordered me out if I was going to continue!)(By the way you should have seen his eyes when the commercial started!)  However, I only counted 4 “sex sells” ads and 2 iffy ones.  The Burger King ad with the ladies dressed as toppings definitely had sexual overtones especially when they called themselves “hard core”.  I think it was Diet Pepsi with P. Diddy that was sensual but not over the top.  There was the GoDaddy.com commercial – again not bad.  Dancing with the Stars showed some heat but not altogether bad either.

It wasn’t until after the Super Bowl that things got steamy!  Grey’s Anatomy started off with the 3 female interns taking a shower together.  It ended up being someone’s (male) dream, but I am sure it got the attention of all the male viewers, just like it intended.
